What is the difference between NBR and Viton O-rings?

NBR (Nitrile) is suitable for fuel and mineral oil, with good resistance to petroleum. Viton (FKM) offers superior high-temperature performance and chemical resistance for extended temperature ranges. Choose NBR for standard fuel/oil; choose Viton for extreme temperature or aggressive fluids.

How do mechanical seals prevent leakage in bilge pumps?

Mechanical seals use two polished faces (stationary and rotating) that maintain close contact, preventing fluid bypass. Springs keep the faces pressed together, absorbing pump vibration. They're more reliable than packing for high-speed pumps.

What is a cutless bearing and why is it needed?

Cutless bearings are seawater-lubricated polymer sleeves that support the propeller shaft where it exits the hull. They replace grease-lubricated bearings, reducing friction and heat while accommodating shaft deflection in rough seas.

Can asbestos gaskets still be used on marine vessels?

Most modern marine regulations restrict asbestos gaskets. Asbestos-free compressed gaskets offer equivalent sealing performance without health risks. Always specify asbestos-free unless your OEM specifically requires a legacy asbestos product.

How often should O-rings be replaced?

O-rings degrade over time due to UV, ozone, heat, and fluid exposure. Replace as part of scheduled maintenance, every 2-5 years depending on service conditions. Always replace if you observe cracks, shrinkage, or hardening.

What is PTFE and when is it used?

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, or Teflon) is a slippery, chemically inert polymer used in seals exposed to aggressive fluids like fuel or cleaning chemicals. It's often combined with other elastomers as a backup ring in dynamic seals.

What is packing and how does it differ from mechanical seals?

Packing is braided fiber rope compressed in a gland, allowing slight weeping for cooling and lubrication. Mechanical seals are precision faces that prevent all leakage. Packing is traditional and simpler; seals are more reliable for high-speed or corrosive applications.

How do I choose the right bearing type for my shaft?

Consider the load type: radial loads use deep-groove ball bearings; thrust loads use tapered roller bearings; combined radial and thrust use cylindrical roller bearings. Marine applications often use sealed or bronze-cage bearings for corrosion resistance.
