Sourcing Technical Spares in the Mediterranean
When a pump fails or a generator throws a fault code, the clock starts ticking. Every hour a critical system is offline costs money, disrupts schedules, and adds stress to the engineering team. The difference between a 24-hour fix and a week-long wait often comes down to one thing: how fast you can get the right part to the right port.
Mercer Yachting's superyacht procurement team specialises in sourcing technical spares and engineering components for vessels operating in the Mediterranean. We draw on a verified network of 500+ suppliers across 25+ countries, with a focus on speed, accuracy, and transparent pricing.
Our base in Malta puts us at the geographic centre of the Med, with direct access to EU suppliers in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Greece, plus established relationships with distributors in Turkey, the UK, and Scandinavia.
What We Source
Our technical spares procurement covers the full range of engineering components found aboard superyachts:
Engine and Propulsion
Filters (oil, fuel, air, coolant), injectors, injection pumps, turbocharger components, heat exchangers, raw water pumps, impellers, thermostats, gasket sets, cylinder head components, crankshaft seals, and complete overhaul kits. We source for Caterpillar, MTU, Cummins, MAN, Volvo Penta, and other marine diesel manufacturers.
Generators and Power
Generator spares for Northern Lights, Kohler, Onan, and Caterpillar gensets. AVR modules, voltage regulators, starter motors, alternators, control panels, and fuel system components. We also source UPS batteries, shore power connectors, and switchgear components.
Hydraulic Systems
Hydraulic hoses, fittings, pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, accumulators, and filters. We work with suppliers who can fabricate custom hydraulic assemblies to specification when OEM replacements aren't available or have extended lead times.
Electrical and Electronics
Marine-grade cable, terminal blocks, circuit breakers, contactors, relays, sensors, transducers, PLC modules, and control system components. We source from ABB, Schneider Electric, Victron, and specialist marine electronics distributors.
HVAC and Climate
Compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, refrigerant, control boards, fan motors, and air handling unit components for marine HVAC systems by Heinen & Hopman, Dometic, and other manufacturers.
Watermakers and Treatment
Reverse osmosis membranes, high-pressure pumps, pre-filters, UV sterilisation lamps, chemical dosing equipment, and control electronics for Sea Recovery, HEM, Village Marine, and other watermaker brands.
Stabilisers and Thrusters
Hydraulic fluid, seals, bearings, actuator components, control modules, and sensor assemblies for Naiad, Quantum, Rolls-Royce, and ABT TRAC stabiliser systems. Bow and stern thruster motors, propellers, and tunnel components.
OEM and Aftermarket Sourcing
We source genuine OEM parts through authorised distributor channels. For every quote, we provide the OEM option as the default. When class requirements or warranty terms mandate OEM parts, that's what we supply.
When you're open to alternatives, we'll also quote quality aftermarket options. For common consumables like filters, belts, and seals, aftermarket parts from reputable manufacturers can offer significant savings without compromising on quality. We'll present both options and let you decide.
Cross-referencing Service
Got a superseded part number? An obsolete component that's been replaced by a newer version? A nameplate so corroded you can only read half the digits? Send us what you have. Our team cross-references across OEM databases, aftermarket catalogues, and our supplier network to find the right replacement.
Emergency Turnaround Times
For critical spares, standard lead times aren't good enough. Our emergency procurement process works like this:
- Immediate sourcing: As soon as we receive an emergency request, we contact multiple suppliers simultaneously to find the fastest available stock.
- Express logistics: We arrange courier, air freight, or same-day delivery depending on your location and the supplier's warehouse.
- Local pickup: For items available from Malta-based or nearby suppliers, our team can collect and deliver dockside the same day.
Typical emergency turnaround for parts available within the EU is 24-48 hours to most Mediterranean ports. For vessels in Malta, same-day delivery is often possible.
Our service fee doesn't change for emergency orders. You won't pay a premium for urgency.
Delivery to Your Vessel
We coordinate delivery to wherever your vessel is. That includes marinas, commercial ports, anchorages, and shipyards across the Mediterranean. For vessels in Malta, we deliver directly to Grand Harbour, Manoel Island Marina, or any other berth on the island.
For shipments to other Med ports, we work with freight forwarders and express couriers to get your parts there on time. Shipping costs are passed through at cost and shown separately on your invoice.
Need parts staged for a future port call? We can hold items in our bonded warehouse facilities in Malta and dispatch them when your vessel is en route.
OEM Brand Matrix — What We Source, By Manufacturer
Superyacht technical spares are brand-locked for good reason — class societies, warranty terms, and crew muscle memory all build up around specific manufacturer ecosystems. Here's where our supplier network has strongest coverage:
| Manufacturer | Typical Equipment | What We Source | Lead Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar (Cat) | Main and auxiliary diesels, generators | Genuine OEM service kits, filters, injectors, turbochargers, gaskets, sensors, ECU parts | 24-72h EU |
| MTU (Rolls-Royce) | High-speed main engines, Series 2000/4000 | OEM filter kits, fuel injectors, turbo cartridges, cylinder heads, overhaul kits | 48-96h EU |
| MAN | V8, V12 main engines | Service kits, injectors, turbochargers, sensors, hand-over parts from authorised distributors | 48-96h EU |
| Volvo Penta | IPS, D-series engines, sterndrives | Service kits, anodes, impellers, raw water pumps, injectors, electronics | 24-48h EU |
| Cummins | Main and auxiliary diesels, QSC/QSM/QSK series | Fuel system components, injectors, filters, turbochargers, rebuild kits | 48-72h EU |
| Northern Lights | Generators | Service kits, alternators, voltage regulators, cooling components | 48-96h EU |
| Kohler | Generators (KDW, EFOZD series) | Service kits, control boards, alternators, exhaust components | 48-96h EU/US |
| Naiad / Quantum / ABT TRAC | Stabilisers | Hydraulic seals, bearings, actuators, control modules, sensors | 48-96h EU/US |
| Sea Recovery / HEM / Village Marine | Watermakers | RO membranes, high-pressure pumps, pre-filters, chemical dosing kits | 24-72h EU |
| Heinen & Hopman / Dometic | Marine HVAC | Compressors, condensers, evaporator parts, control boards, fan motors | 48-96h EU |
Don't see your manufacturer? The list above is what we source most often — it's not exhaustive. The 500+ supplier network covers virtually every marine OEM and aftermarket brand active in the Mediterranean. If you have a brand-specific need (Wärtsilä, Isotta Fraschini, Scania, Yanmar, ZF, Twin Disc, etc.), send us the request and we'll confirm coverage and lead time within the same day.
48-Hour AOG Workflow for Critical Spares
"AOG" is aviation language for Aircraft on Ground — a plane that can't take off because a critical part has failed. The superyacht equivalent is a vessel that can't leave the dock (or worse, a vessel adrift with a main engine fault and a guest cruise on the schedule). Our AOG workflow is built for that scenario:
Hour 0–1: Triage
You email or call ops@merceryachting.com with the part reference or a photo of the failed component. If you can't read the nameplate, a blurry photo is fine — we've sourced spares from nothing more. Within 60 minutes we return: (a) confirmed part identification, (b) nearest available source, (c) realistic delivery window to your current port.
Hour 1–4: Source & Lock
We contact multiple suppliers simultaneously — authorised OEM channels first, then aftermarket alternatives. For Malta-based vessels, we often pull from our own or partner stock on the island. For vessels elsewhere, we lock the fastest source and begin logistics coordination in parallel.
Hour 4–8: Ship
Express courier for small items (up to ~30kg), air cargo for heavier or bulkier components, same-day driver for regional EU dispatches. We handle customs paperwork in parallel with transit, so the part clears the destination port without delay.
Hour 8–48: Dockside Delivery
Most Med destinations are reachable within 24–48h of dispatch from an EU source. For Malta-based vessels, same-day is routine. For more remote anchorages (Albanian coast, Tunisian ports, remote Greek islands), we coordinate local agents who can collect and deliver from the nearest commercial airport.
Case Study: 55m AOG Weekend Rescue
A 55m motor yacht lost a raw water pump on a Saturday afternoon, 48 hours before a scheduled charter departure from Grand Harbour. By 18:00 Saturday we'd identified the exact Jabsco replacement, by 21:00 we'd located the part with a Hamburg supplier, and by 14:00 Monday it was installed and tested. See the full case study for the playbook.
Our service fee doesn't change for AOG work. You won't see surge pricing or urgency surcharges — just pass-through freight cost, which is often the dominant line item on rush orders. Honest pricing under pressure is the whole point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you source parts for older or discontinued engines?
Yes. We regularly source parts for engines that are no longer in production. Our supplier network includes specialist dealers who stock legacy components, and we can often find quality aftermarket replacements when OEM parts are unavailable.
Do you handle warranty claims on defective parts?
We coordinate warranty returns with the supplier on your behalf. If a part arrives defective or fails prematurely within the manufacturer's warranty period, we'll manage the replacement process.
Can I send you a planned maintenance schedule so you can source parts in advance?
Absolutely. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce costs and avoid emergency orders. Send us your PMS schedule and we'll quote the parts ahead of time, source at the best prices, and have everything ready for your maintenance window.
What information do you need to quote a part?
Ideally: the part number, equipment make and model, and quantity. But we work with whatever you have. Descriptions, photos of nameplates, or even photos of the part itself are often enough for us to identify and source the correct component.
How does your pricing compare to buying direct from OEM distributors?
Our negotiated supplier pricing, combined with our service fee, is often comparable to or better than what you'd pay going direct, especially for multi-brand orders where we can consolidate shipments and reduce freight costs.
